Indigenous Community Fights Coal Mine Threat

The Wangan and Jagalingou (W&J) people in central Queensland, Australia, are engaged in a protracted protest against the Carmichael coal mine, owned by Bravus (Adani). This four-year-long protest, marked by a continuously burning ceremonial fire, centers on the mine's proximity to sacred springs on their traditional land. Adrian Burragubba and his son Coedie McAvoy lead the campaign, viewing the mine as a threat to their cultural heritage and spiritual connection to the land. They argue the mine's presence directly jeopardizes their ancestral history and knowledge embedded within their land.
